Interview: Cenobites

Fast & Noisy, the CENOBITES play a wild mix between Psycho and Punk. They're on the stage for several years now, and became quite famous in Europe and even in Brazil ! They call their music : "PsychoMetalPunkRock’n’RollCore", and their last LP, out on Drunkabilly Rcds should prouv you that they don't lie... Un new single "SECRETUM" should be out in a few days.

 

1) Who are you? (name, hobbies, fav' band, fav' movie, ...) Describe yourself in a few words.

Well, I will introduce the band first.
My name is Dimitri and I’m the singer.
P.G. Vogeli is the bassplayer, Mister Kiel is the drummer and Wally (D.M.T.U.P.) plays the guitar.
We like to make music and watch other bands play. We especially like bands like Motorhead, Demented are Go and all kinds of other rock and punkrock bands.
Our favourite movie must be Hellraiser, I guess.

2) Where are you from?

We’re all from the same area in Holland. We all live under the thick black smoke off Rotterdam.

3) How long have you been playing for? How many gigs?

The band Cenobites exists for almost ten years now, but the line-up has changed quite a few times. In total we must have played at least 250 gigs.

4) What are the bands you like?

Like I said earlier we don’t really care as long as it rocks like hell.

5) What are your main musical influences?

Because we had a lot of line-up changes, we also had a lot of different musical influences. Every new bandmember brings in his own style, his own influences. So you can say we are kind of a psychometalpunkrock’n’rollcore band.

6) Other Influences?

Sex, drugs and uhhh did I mention drugs already?!?

7) Can you describe your music?

We like to call our style cenodemonicsounds. We want to create a good mix between psychobilly and punkrock.

8) Listening to your LP, there's not a lot of Rockabilly influences. What is your definition of the Psychobilly?

Like I said in the last question, the mix between psychobilly and punkrock is more important for us. There are enough bands already that have a very obvious rockabilly feel to them. Maybe we will make couple of songs like that in the future, but it’s not our main goal.

9) Tell us a little more about your discography.

* Cenobites 10” – first studio recordings out on Tombstone records. (still available)
* Girl in the woods 7”- three songs with a completely different line-up (Tocado records)
* Demons to some…Angels to others – first full-length 13 songs out on Drunkabilly records
* Secretum 7” – 3 brand new songs. Out on Drunkabilly records as we speak.
We also appear on a shitload of compilation albums.

10) You've played some concerts in Brazil. Could you tell us a little more about this tour?

Some concerts!! We’ve been on tour there two times already and we are going back for a third tour in February next year. (2004) That country is really amazing we had a very good time there the first two times, so we are very happy we can go there again. The guys from Os Catalepticos made it possible, esp. Vlad. He’s doing very good work for the local scene.
And the kids over there love it. They are not yet spoiled like us. We can see for instance Mad Sin every weekend if we want to, but to them every concert is still very special and I like that.

11) Cenobites : Demons or Angels?

Hahahaha, It’s more like. Cenobites: clowns or bozo’s. Hahaha!!!

12) Your last CD has been made on Drunkabilly Rcds. How was it perceived ? Was it well sold?

Well yeah, actually. We sold out in the first six months and now the second pressing is not yet sold out but it’s going very well. There are even some plan to bring the album out in Brazil. But like I said that’s still a plan.
The reviews on the album were very good. And yes we also had some bad reviews as well, but we don’t care. Not everybody’s perfect.

13) What are the next projects of the band?

We are bringing out some new material very soon. The single “Secretum” is already at the presser so it’s just a matter of a few weeks.
We also introduced our new website: www.cenobites.net.
We are going to Brazil to tour with Os Catalepticos and Chibuku. And we will probably play all over Europe again and maybe even in the States. But that’s still plans you never know how everything will work out. Maybe we will stay home and make a new album.
